Grants & Stipends

Fellowships, with accompanying stipend, are awarded each year on a competitive basis to well qualified graduate students. Preference is given to PhD students with a proven record of academic excellence and a compelling research agenda. There are four different kinds of awards (for the 2014-15 academic year):

Dissertation Fellowship

One dissertation fellowship of $10,000 is awarded annually to a graduate student who has completed comprehensive exams and is within 2 years of completing their dissertation.

Guidelines: This award cannot be accepted in conjunction with any other BYU award in the same academic year. This award can only be received once.

Application Process: Opens June 1st and closes June 30th. To apply, send a letter of intent (including brief bio and description of academic interests), CV, official transcript, two letters of recommendation and a letter from your Bishop orBranch President to the Nibley Fellowship program (nibleyfellowships@byu.edu). Letters of recommendation and the Bishop's endorsement should be sent directly to the Maxwell Institute. Letters of recommendation/endorsement should be typed on official university or church letterhead. Applicants will be notified of final decisions in July, and awards will be mailed by August 15th.

Graduate Stipends

Two graduate fellowships of $5,000 are awarded annually to PhD students in any stage of their program.

Guidelines: This award cannot be accepted in conjunction with any other BYU award in the same academic year. This award can only be received once.

Graduate Research Grant

Five research grants of $1500 are awarded annually to Masters or PhD students for the purchase of books or other research supplies.

Guidelines: This award can be accepted in conjunction with a Nibley Travel Stipend in the same academic year. This award can received up to three times.

Application Process: Opens June 1st and closes June 30th. To apply, send a letter of intent (including brief bio and description of academic interests), recent transcript, one letter of recommendation and a letter from your Bishop or Branch President to the Nibley Fellowship program (nibleyfellowships@byu.edu). The letter of recommendation and the Bishop's endorsement should be sent directly to the Maxwell Institute. Letters of recommendation/endorsement should be typed on official university or church letterhead. Applicants will be notified of final decisions in July, and awards will be mailed by August 15th.

Conference Grant

Five conference grants are awarded annually for PhD students to attend a national (up to $500) or international conferences (up to $1500).

Guidelines: This award can be accepted in conjunction with a Nibley graduate research grant, or any other BYU award, in the same academic year. This award can received up to three times.

Application Process: Opens October 1st and closes April 30th. To apply, send a letter of intent (including brief bio, description of academic interests, and reason for attending the conference), one letter of recommendation from your current adviser, and a letter from your Bishop or Branch President to the Nibley Fellowship program (nibleyfellowships@byu.edu). The letter of recommendation and the Bishop's endorsement should be sent directly to the Maxwell Institute. Letters of recommendation/endorsement should be typed on official university or church letterhead. Applicants will be notified of decisions within a month of the application.
