Nephi1 was the son of Lehi. With his family, he traveled from Jerusalem to the Promised Land of the New World. The family was divided throughout their travels and the division became permanent after Lehi's death when Nephi1 took whoever would follow him and left his two oldest brothers and their followers in the land of Nephi. Nephi1 was the first king over his people and subsequent kings used his name when they inherited the throne. Even when that practice had ended the name continued to be used throughout Nephite history.
