To the officers and staff of FARMS who initiated this project and entrusted me with it I wish to express thanks, especially to M. Gerald Bradford and Melvin J. Thorne. David J. Whittaker, of Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library, in addition to preparing the bibliography included in this work, arranged for the transcription and processing of the John L. Sorenson oral histories, which should be of value to future researchers as they study twentieth-century Latter-day Saint scholars and their faith.

A work like this does not see the light of day without much behind-the-scenes labor. Thanks to Daniel B. McKinlay and Reed D. Andrew for carefully checking sources and verifying quotations and to Wendy C. Thompson and Emily L. Johnson for proofreading. The major responsibility of editing each of the separate contributions and preparing the entire manuscript for publication has been that of Donald L. Brugger, to whom I express special thanks.

The drawings and map have been prepared by illustrator Michael P. Lyon. The typesetting and design are the work of Mary Mahan.

Truly this volume has been a team project. I know that all who have participated join me in the wish that it will stimulate, add to our knowledge, and demonstrate respect and admiration for John L. Sorenson.
