Oh How Surely Christ Sanctifies His Own

Alan C. Ashton

Neal A. Maxwell Lecture, 12 April 2012

I would like to discuss this seven-word title, which is centered on Christ—“Oh How Surely Christ Sanctifies His Own”—and explain what it means to me. How does Christ sanctify? And who are those whom Christ owns? I appreciate this opportunity to bear witness of the reality of Christ and of his sanctifying influence in our lives as we covenant to do his will and obey his commandments. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, King David declared, “For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, Lord, becamest their God.” 1 Neal A. Maxwell, in whose honor we meet, was such an Israelite disciple of Christ, sanctified and owned by Christ.

What must we do to become owned by Christ? The people who were overcome by the words of King Benjamin, and by the words of the angel who visited him, proclaimed, “And we are willing to enter into a covenant with our God to do his will, and to be obedient to his commandments in all things that he shall command us, all the remainder of our days.” 2 At this, King Benjamin exulted and proclaimed, “And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters.” 3 Salvation is a family affair, of the Savior’s owned family.

How are we sanctified? Sanctification comes through our hearing the word of God and living in harmony with that truth. However, we cannot achieve sanctification on our own, for, after all we can do, it is only by the blood and atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ that we can be sanctified.4 Paul taught, “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.” 5 For our sanctification, the Lord requires our all. King Benjamin counseled, “Ye are eternally indebted to your heavenly Father, to render to him all that you have and are.” 6 Therein lies the key to sanctification.

Our physical resources are already the Lord’s, as King David acknowledged in his prayer and great sacrifice at the inauguration of his son Solomon as king: “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.” 7 But the one thing that is ours, as Elder Maxwell often testified, is our own will. When we surrender our will to our Savior, he owns us, we become his children, and he sanctifies us. Jesus gave the ultimate example in his surrender of his will to the Father. He proclaimed, “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life.” 8 What a glorious prospect for us to be given of the Father to the Savior. We must willingly give our whole souls to be owned and sanctified by our Lord and Redeemer.

Elder Maxwell spoke of this willingness as our desire to do the Savior’s will. He said, “What we insistently desire, over time, is what we will eventually become and what we will receive in eternity.” 9 The Lord proclaimed, “For I . . . will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts,” 10 and Alma said, “I know that [God] granteth unto men according to their desire.” 11 Those who have evil desires are those who come up short and are insufficient. These, because of their desires, receive the mark of the beast, as we read in Revelation 13:18, “Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six”—that is, six-six-six. On the other hand, for those with righteous desires, the number associated with sanctification, as I intend to show, is seven; six always comes up short.

Elder Maxwell constantly demonstrated his willingness and desire to do the Savior’s bidding. Early one evening in the fall of 1996, Elder Maxwell came to our home in Orem. Our daughter Emily and her husband, Paul, who lived half an hour away, just happened to be visiting us. They had just lost their four-year-old son in a bicycle accident in which he was run over and killed. They were grieving deeply. Elder Maxwell spoke compassionately to them, mourned with them, comforted them, and brought renewed hope into their lives. I was so grateful for his coming to our home at this vital time to succor our children. In an evening when I asked him if he could stay longer, Elder Maxwell mentioned he was making three other visits that night: first, he was going to comfort a brother who had just been diagnosed with leukemia and whose wife had left him because she couldn’t face the future of having to take care of an ailing husband; second, he was going to visit a member suffering with cancer (he said he understood much about that suffering); and third, he was going to visit a couple to counsel them regarding their marital problems.

Certainly these actions demonstrated the surrender of Elder Maxwell’s will to Christ. Elder Maxwell declared, “It is only by yielding to God that we can begin to realize His will for us. And if we truly trust God, why not yield to His loving omniscience? After all, He knows us and our possibilities much better than do we.” 12 Yielding our will gives us a congruency with Christ. Elder Maxwell said, “Congruency with Christ means also doing positive things that the ordinary person wouldn’t think of doing. Congruency with Christ, in effect, means that we have a kind of inner gyroscope which marks (even more precisely than any printed set of standards or any handbook can do) the path the Lord would have us pursue.” 13

Because of the Savior, God grants that inner gyroscopic direction to us through the Holy Ghost 14 and fills our minds with our possibilities when we sincerely ask of God in faith. I would like to mention two major times when I received knowledge, light, and encouragement through the Holy Spirit regarding my schooling and vocation. I was in the PhD computer science program at the University of Utah, and I was struggling with what to do for my thesis. As I was deep in prayer one evening, I had the impression that I could marry my expertise in music with my studies in electrical engineering and my knowledge of computers. I was shown a picture of a computer in the middle of an organ. I drew up the diagram and presented the idea to my thesis advisor, who could see my enthusiasm. I had faith that I could do it. Many months later, after building a Schober electronic organ from a kit and interfacing it to a set of field-effect transistors that was controlled by a computer, I demonstrated the computer-driven musical performance of the accompaniment of the Haydn trumpet concerto with my trumpet student, Otto Johnson, performing the concerto at my thesis defense. We had developed a linear music language and a computer-programmed music system that interpreted and played our linear music transcriptions. We were able to do this with a rudimentary time-sharing system that we wrote that would allow several tasks on the computer to be going on at once; namely, one task to read the linear music notation into the computer, a second task to place ordered timed events into a playlist, a third task to “play” the events from the playlist, and a fourth task to receive instructions from the terminal keyboard. Events in the playlist were ordered according to time and included such things as the turning off and on of notes, the selection of stop settings, volume levels, and time durations. We had great flexibility in our computer-controlled music organ. We could input information into the computer from the terminal keyboard or from the organ keys. The computer could control many things: the communication lines, the terminal screen, the organ tones, the organ stop settings, the volume, the graphing of the music on a video screen, and the turning on and off of lights above the organ keys. We put white lights above the white keys and green lights above the black keys. While music was being played by our music interpreter, we could type in commands to our program, we could show which notes were being played by lighting up the lights above the organ keys, we could show on the terminal screen the transcription being interpreted, we could show the graphing of the music in various forms, we could speed up or slow down the music, we could transpose the music up or down in various keys, and we could even turn the music upside down. We accomplished this on our PDP-8 computer, which in appearance was about the size of a large refrigerator-freezer combo, but which had only four thousand 12-bit words of memory. That is equivalent to only 6 kilobytes of memory. We learned to program efficiently in such a small space. Now we speak of many gigabytes of data storage, even in our pocket telephones. My iPad, for example, has ten million times the amount of memory than what we had on our PDP-8 computer! Whether it was music or word processing, I programmed computers to help me do what I wanted to do. Speaking of the word do, the Savior often emphasized to his hearers to do his teachings.

Listen to this sentence that comprises 3 Nephi 27:21–22 and count the occurrences of the word do: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel; and ye know the things that ye must do in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do; therefore, if ye do these things blessed are ye, for ye shall be lifted up at the last day.”

There are six occurrences of do. When I noticed that and made that count, I thought, “Where is the other do?” I’ve seen that seven is an important number in the scriptures having to do with sanctification, purification, and cleansing. I looked back at verse 13, the beginning of this carefully crafted explanation by the Savior concerning his gospel, and found the other do. In this thirteenth verse the Savior says, “Behold I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me” (emphasis added). And perhaps to emphasize purity before the Father, the word Father is mentioned exactly seven times as well in these verses, from 13 to 22 (3 Nephi 27:13–22). This concise explanation by the Savior of his gospel begins in verse 13 with “This is the gospel which I have given unto you” and ends in verse 21 with the Savior saying, “This is my gospel,” so it is designated unmistakably as a unit. This description by the Savior certainly deals with sanctification, for the following four items are mentioned in these verses: first, in verse 16, those who repent, are baptized, and endure to the end will be held guiltless before the Father; second, in verse 19, no unclean thing can enter into the kingdom of the Father; third, also in verse 19, all who enter in must have their garments washed in the Savior’s blood because of their faith and the repentance of all their sins and their faithfulness unto the end; and fourth, in verse 20, these are they who are sanctified before the Father and made spotless by the reception of the Holy Ghost. We do see that at the beginning and at the last of this definition of his gospel, the Savior emphasized the imperative to do his sayings.

The Savior emphasized the same thing at the end of his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7) and in his corresponding Sermon at the Temple (3 Nephi 12–14) when he said, in 3 Nephi 14, that “he that doeth the will of my Father” shall enter into the kingdom of heaven 15 and “whoso heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock” 16 (emphasis added). The number of mentions of do (including doeth) in this fourteenth chapter of 3 Nephi and also in the corresponding seventh chapter of Matthew is six. The seventh mention of do in 3 Nephi is at the beginning of the following chapter (3 Nephi 15), where the Savior says, “Whoso remembereth these sayings of mine and doeth them, him will I raise up at the last day.” 17 This is not in the corresponding chapter 8 in Matthew. But there is a seventh mention of do in the Joseph Smith Translation of Matthew 7.18

Another interesting collection of seven occurrences of do occurs in 3 Nephi 13:1–3, also in this Sermon at the Temple, where the Lord commands us to do alms but not to be seen of men. These verses begin with “Verily, verily, I say that I would that ye should do alms unto the poor” (emphasis added). These words do not occur in the corresponding Matthew 6 version of the same thing. This occurrence of do in these additional words in 3 Nephi brings the mentions of do to seven. King Benjamin shows that to do alms to the poor is certainly connected to sanctification. He says, “For the sake of retaining a remission of your sins from day to day, that ye may walk guiltless before God—I would that ye should impart of your substance to the poor, every man according to that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and administering to their relief, both spiritually and temporally, according to their wants.” 19

The word of God in the Book of Mormon has many spiritual secrets that continue to be revealed.20 The Book of Mormon with its powerful testimony of the Savior brings individuals unto him that they might be sanctified. While we were serving on our mission in Canada, two of our elders who were serving in a town near Niagara Falls reported the following incident: Elder Taggart was talking to a woman in the street when a belligerent man came up and yelled that the Book of Mormon was not true. The missionary bore testimony that the Book of Mormon is true and that it testifies of Christ. The man claimed emphatically that it did not. Elder Taggart’s companion, Elder Medina, came over because of the raised voice of the man and asked what the problem was. The man forcefully claimed that the Book of Mormon did not testify of Christ. Elder Medina bore his witness that it indeed does, but the man continued to disrupt the conversations of the missionaries. Finally Elder Medina handed the loud man a copy of the Book of Mormon and said, “Sir, open up this Book of Mormon and put your finger on the page and read out loud what it says. If it doesn’t speak of Christ, we will go on our way.” The man snatched the book, opened it up, plunged his finger on the verse that happened to be 2 Nephi 25:26, and began reading aloud, “And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” The man quietly apologized and went on his way.

In his introduction to the Book of Mormon, Moroni prophesied that it was written “to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God.” There are hundreds of names for Jesus Christ in the scriptures, and for many years as I have read the scriptures and found an appellation that I believed to be a name of Christ, I have checked my list and put it in with a reference if it was not already there. I have found over one thousand names, and this list is ongoing. These names of Christ, or of Deity, inspire and sanctify. (A copy of this list is available on the Maxwell Institute website.) At the beginning of the list, I wrote that these are “Names of Jesus Christ found in the scriptures: Since He is one with the Father and is in the Father and the Father in Him, and has all glory, names can apply to the Father and also to the Son.” To the Nephites he declared, “In me hath the Father glorified his name.” 21 Also, as the First Presidency has stated, Father signifies Jesus as follows: (1) Father as Creator, (2) Father of those who abide in his gospel, and (3) Father by divine investiture of authority. 22 Thus many of the titles, names, or attribute-nomenclatures can refer to our Heavenly Father as well as to his Son, Jesus Christ. My love, reverence, and awe increase as I think of and ponder these sacred names. Here are a few names of Christ that bring to mind his sanctifying power:

First name of Christ: Tower of Salvation.23 The prophets, or watchmen in the tower, are certainly in the Savior as they speak his word.24 To be sanctified by the Savior and to receive salvation in the kingdom of God is the greatest of all the gifts of God.25

Second name of Christ: Strength of My Heart.26 The Savior knows our hearts, and he will purify and grant grace unto us as we have faith in him and come unto him in humility.27 This purifying of our hearts and sanctification come as we yield our hearts unto God.28 Oh how surely Christ sanctifies his own.

Third name of Christ: The Son Who Is Consecrated for Evermore.29 Just as our Redeemer was consecrated, so he will consecrate us for eternal life as we are obedient to him and to his everlasting covenant.30

Fourth name of Christ: Tender Plant.31 As the Savior showed meekness and submissiveness before his Father, we can become sanctified and more like Christ as we submit ourselves to him and tenderly grow up before him.

Fifth name of Christ: Precious Corner Stone.32 Asking Job where he was when he, God, laid the foundations of the earth, God challenged Job, “Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof?” 33 The Savior is the Cornerstone to the household of God who are built upon the foundation of his apostles and prophets, and he will gather his own to his temple and sanctify them.34

Sixth name of Christ: Mediator of Life.35 This is mentioned in the Joseph Smith Translation of the third chapter of Galatians. Christ is the Advocate for his own and reconciles his own that they may be with him to partake of eternal life.36

Seventh name of Christ: Messiah Who Is the Lamb of God.37 In the last book of the New Testament, the revelation of Jesus Christ given to the apostle John, we read that the saints of the Lord who came out of great tribulation had their robes washed and miraculously made white in the blood of the Lamb.38 Oh how surely Christ sanctifies his own.

Jesus’s precious blood sanctifies us as we willingly, obediently, and gratefully accept his infinite atonement. At the center and that which is most important of all things is the atonement of Jesus Christ.39 Concerning the atonement of Jesus Christ, the Lord revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith “that sanctification through the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is just and true, to all those who love and serve God with all their mights, minds, and strength.”40 The Savior’s own are those who put off the natural man by yielding to the enticings of the Holy Spirit and who become saints through the atonement of Christ the Lord.41 Just as the atonement of Jesus Christ is the center in the chiastic message of Alma 36 in the Book of Mormon,42 so it is central in this message. The atonement of Jesus Christ is at the center of the lives of all those who belong to him. Oh how I love the Savior, and how thankful I am for the atonement of Jesus Christ, which I gratefully, obediently, and willingly accept.

Of the house of Jacob in the latter days, the Lord who redeemed Abraham said, “They shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob.” 43 The names of Christ are of Deity, and many that refer to the Son can also refer to the Father. These names inspire discipleship and lead to sanctification. In his Intercessory Prayer, Christ prayed, “I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me,” 44 and he said, “I am come in my Father’s name.”45 In 1916 the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve reaffirmed this: “Thus the Father placed His name upon the Son.”46 Speaking again of the names of Christ that I have collected, some of these names are descriptive, expounding the godly attributes of Christ. In this regard, one of the names of Christ is Sanctification, for in 1 Corinthians 1:30 we read, “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” The Savior’s healing arms of mercy are extended all the day long to bless and sanctify us, with a promise of eternal life if we will repent and come unto him.47 Elder Maxwell said, “The living God will not go away. He will continue to try to work with us, combining his perfect love and his omniscience in wonderful ways to bless us and to teach all who are willing.” 48 Christ continually reaches out to us for our sanctification.

As I read some of the writings of Elder Maxwell, I found a name of the Savior that is not in my list. This name is Elder Brother. Elder Maxwell said, “A loving mother will hope for the return one day of her runaway son, but the runaway may elect to stay away; however, he cannot run far enough to be beyond the redemptive reach of his Elder Brother!” 49 To sanctify us, the Savior runs to us, succors us.

Many of the names of Christ in my list are redundant, having a possessive pronoun as part of the name, such as My God and My Savior Jesus Christ, or My Lord and My God, or My God and My Lord, or Our Great and Eternal Head, or Your Redeemer Even Jesus Christ.50 These names emphasize his intimacy with us. Here are seven more names of Christ from my list:

A seventh name of Christ: Rock of My Salvation.51 We become sanctified when we build upon the rock of our Redeemer, which is a sure foundation, a foundation upon which if we build we cannot fall.52

Sixth name of Christ: Eternity. Of his travels from Haran towards Canaan, Abraham said, “Eternity was our covering and our rock and our salvation.” 53 Such an expansive, eternal covering thoroughly saves, protects, and sanctifies.

Fifth name of Christ: Endless and Eternal.54 The Lord showed to Enoch and to Joseph Smith wonderful mysteries of godliness as he revealed these sacred names to them.55 Just as eternal punishment is God’s punishment, eternal life is God’s life. Eternal sanctification comes to those who are found in the book of the names of the sanctified, that is, those of the celestial world.56

Fourth name of Christ: Bright Star.57 The Lord’s own look upon him as the ancient mariners did to the North Star for guidance in the dark. Christ leads those who keep his commandments to light and to eternal happiness.58

Third name of Christ: Christ, Your Redeemer, Your Lord and Your God.59 This name demonstrates the personal interest and involvement of the Lord and the abundant influence of his sanctifying and redemptive power for each of us.

Second name of Christ: Founder of Peace.60 The Savior offers mercy and peace to those who love him, have faith in him, covenant with him, and repent.61

First name of Christ: High and Lofty One That Inhabiteth Eternity.62 The Merciful Lord invites his own, that is, those who are given him of the Father, to be one with him, even to become his own children.

This title, One, is the first mention of Christ in the Book of Mormon by Nephi other than in his foreword. It occurs in 1 Nephi in the first chapter, verse 9. Nephi tells of his father Lehi’s vision in which Lehi sees One descending out of the midst of heaven with a luster above that of the sun at noonday, with twelve others following him. That calls to mind Joseph Smith’s description of the pillar of light above the brightness of the sun that fell upon him when he saw the Father and Son, whose brightness and glory defy all description. These answers to Lehi’s and Joseph Smith’s prayers were extraordinary. The answer to my prayer concerning the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon was remarkable to me. I know that Moroni’s promise at the end of the Book of Mormon is true, that if we ask God the Father in the name of Christ with a sincere heart and with real intent, he will make the truth of it known by the power of the Holy Ghost.63 That happened to me. Because of a powerful, unmistakable spiritual manifestation, which occurred to me as I prayed in an army barracks at Fort Ord, California, after I had read the Book of Mormon during basic training, I know without a shadow of doubt that the Book of Mormon is true and from God. As I obey the covenants of the Eternal Father that are contained in the Book of Mormon, I feel the cleansing power of the atonement of Christ and know of a certainty of the reality of Jesus Christ. Truly Nephi’s words ring true to me when he said, “And as I spake concerning the convincing of the Jews, that Jesus is the very Christ, it must needs be that the Gentiles be convinced also that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God; and that he manifesteth himself unto all those who believe in him, by the power of the Holy Ghost.”64 For many years now I have read from the Book of Mormon every day, and it has ever brought me closer unto my Savior Jesus Christ.

In this reading I enjoy looking for symbols and patterns in the word of God that are consistent with the Lord’s revealed word in all scripture. The number seven is especially sacred in the scriptures. The last words of Moroni in the last book of the Book of Mormon, verses 32 and 33, have six mentions of the word Christ and six mentions of God or Father. So again I questioned, where is the other occurrence of each of these? Backing up one verse, I found the other occurrence of Father, and backing up one further, to verse 30, I found the seventh occurrence of Christ. This thirtieth verse begins with “and again,” which ties it to the final verse since verse 33 begins also with the same words, “and again.” This unit of these four verses, Moroni 10:30–33, forms a wonderful final exposition from the prophet Moroni concerning sanctification.

Also in these verses there are seven occurrences of the grace or power of God. Grace is the enabling power of God in our lives that enables us with the power to do what we cannot do ourselves.65 So there are seven mentions of the grace of God or the power of God, seven mentions of Christ, and seven mentions of Father or God. Again these counts of seven are tied to sanctification since sanctification is a major theme in these verses, as we see in verse 33, the second-to-last verse of the Book of Mormon: “And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.” This emphasis on sanctification is confirmed and strengthened by the seven occurrences of Christ, of God or Father, and also of the grace or power of God. These counts of seven reinforce that sanctification comes by the grace and power of Christ and his Father to those who, because of their obedience, love of God, and repentance of their sins, become owned by Christ.66

Oh how surely Christ sanctifies his own. There are numerous examples in the scriptures that associate the number seven with cleansing, purification, and sanctification. In the angel’s pure message to King Benjamin concerning Christ and the atonement of Christ, and the sanctifying power of Christ, there are exactly seven mentions of the word Christ.67 That’s in Mosiah, chapter 3. Naaman, the captain of the host of the king of Syria, saw how vital seven was in his cleansing. It wasn’t until he had dipped himself in the river Jordan seven times according to the words of the prophet Elisha that the cleansing of Naaman’s skin of leprosy occurred. His skin became pure like the flesh of a little child.68 The sanctifying Day of Atonement, which prefigured Christ, occurs in month number seven.69 In Psalm 12:6 we read, “The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” In Leviticus we read that holy anointing oil was sprinkled seven times in the sanctification and cleansing of the altar and its associated vessels, and also the same with the blood and oil sprinkled in the sacrifice of the sin offering, and in the cleansing of individuals from leprosy, and in the cleansing of houses from the plague.70 To us, because of Christ, the Holy Ghost is given by the Father to be the cleansing and sanctifying agent as he purges our souls of iniquity with fire.71 In addition to the sanctifying power of the Holy Ghost in the spiritual realm, I have been grateful for temporal guidance and direction from the Holy Spirit.

The second major revelation to me regarding my vocation and schooling came when, as a professor of computer science here at BYU, I asked of God whether I could pursue the development of a computer program to do word processing. I had used a program text editor on a mainframe computer, coupled with a formatting printing program to produce my doctoral thesis, and I had written a text editor, which had word-processing components in it, for our small PDP-8 computer so that we could type in music transcriptions in our linear music language. So I had some experience with and a great deal of interest in word processing. During my summer vacation of 1978, I designed how a word processor should work. I determined that having a word processor on shared-logic general-purpose computers that were used for data processing would be beneficial because that is where the data from calculations resided, and so this data would be immediately available for inclusion in written reports. In those days, word processing was done on stand-alone computers that were designed just to do word processing. The answer to my sincere prayer was unmistakable and in the affirmative. I am grateful for that strong manifestation of the Holy Spirit because there were several setbacks and times when it appeared that our starting a business wouldn’t work out. Faith in this definite answer gave me the fortitude and confidence to move forward and not give up even when we thought that we had had the rug pulled out from under us. Things worked out for us in an unforeseen manner, and we saw that our early direction would not have brought the success of the company that we eventually enjoyed.

We were able to take ideas from my PDP-8 editor, from our music-playing system, and from our initial shared-logic word processor (called SSI*WP) to give our PC-based WordPerfect unique capabilities on the single-tasked DOS operating system. We put a simple time-sharing monitor right in WordPerfect, and that gave us the capability of concurrent editing and printing of documents. We listened to our customers as we continually added new features. WordPerfect became the top-selling application program for the PC, and WordPerfect Corporation grew to have nearly six thousand employees. Not only did our success bless our own lives, but it has blessed the lives of our employees, the lives of those who used our word processor, and also the lives of members of our community at large. I am grateful for the encouragement, light, and knowledge I have received from the Holy Spirit that have blessed and guided me in my temporal affairs.

Elder Maxwell spoke of our yielding to God as an inner gyroscope, steadying and guiding us to become congruent with Christ.72 Constantly Elder Maxwell demonstrated his willingness to do the Savior’s bidding unto the very end. In 2004 my wife and I were called on a mission to preside over the Canada Toronto West Mission. Just as we were to enter the MTC, there was a priesthood leadership meeting in our area at which Elder Maxwell spoke. He had not been well, but he insisted on bearing his testimony, and it turned out, I suppose, to be his last time in such a setting. Elder Maxwell spoke from his heart. He pleaded and warned that we each receive according to our desires. If we desire evil, he said, we will get evil; and if we desire good, we will receive good. He warned if we are wicked we will reap the whirlwind; and he promised if we are righteous we will prosper and gain peace and happiness. Because of the overwhelming power of the Holy Spirit on this occasion, the words of Elder Maxwell sank deeply into my heart. Soon we were on our way to Canada, and just after we arrived at our mission home in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, we heard that Elder Maxwell had passed away. How grateful I was that I could take to the Saints in Ontario, Canada, the testimony of Elder Maxwell, their own missionary, and that I could share examples that I had personally witnessed of his surrendering his will entirely to God.

Note the contrast of evil desires and righteous desires: To those who have evil desires, Satan lies, tempts with deception, intimidates, accuses, leads astray, and works in darkness. By cunning deception the devil encourages his followers to wickedness, lasciviousness, immorality, pride, covetousness, and murder for gain. The fruits of evil desires are misery, broken homes, destruction, unhappiness, death, and hell. Those who have these evil desires receive the number and mark of the beast as John the Revelator prophesied. On the other hand, to those who have righteous desires, the Lord speaks truth, invites to come unto him with an everlasting embrace of eternal love, promises eternal life, extends forgiveness, gives peace, sanctifies, and binds them together as eternal families. By his own example, the Good Shepherd leads his followers to righteousness, meekness, faith, hope, charity, virtue, and knowledge. The fruits of righteous desires are happiness, peace, love, enduring families, cleanliness, knowledge of the truth, and eternal life.

Finally, I return to our becoming willingly owned by our Lord. Christ owns and sanctifies us by the shedding of his blood and by his word, which we must earnestly seek, love, and obey. We indeed must obey, love, and seek, but it is the Savior who makes us clean. As we read in the “Olive Leaf,” the eighty-eighth section of the Doctrine and Covenants, “Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God. . . . Yea, purify your hearts, and cleanse your hands and your feet before me, that I may make you clean.” 73 Oh how surely Christ sanctifies his own. In Psalms we read, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.” 74

As precious, purchased 75 jewels, the Lord’s family will be owned by him, bound together by the eternal sealing powers of his everlasting priesthood.76 In words given through the prophet Malachi and also by the Savior personally to the Nephites, we see of those who fear the Lord and present a book of remembrance before the Lord (think of temple records), “And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” 77 Truly, as President Ezra Taft Benson observed in his First Presidency message in the July 1992 Ensign, “In an eternal sense, salvation is a family affair.” 78 John the Revelator testified that Jesus Christ “loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.” 79

At Adam’s baptism the Lord spoke unto Adam and told him how we can become His children: “Ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye might be sanctified from all sin.” 80 Once Adam was baptized, he heard a voice out of heaven saying, “Thou art baptized with fire, and with the Holy Ghost. . . . Behold, thou art one in me, a son of God; and thus may all become my sons.” 81

God’s own elect, they who know the Master’s voice, are known and called as his own sheep by name.82 Great was the Savior’s pleading and intercession for them as he prayed to the Father, “Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. . . . Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth. . . . And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.” 83 May we all seek to be one with, and owned by, the Savior, as my seven-word title expresses: “Oh How Surely Christ Sanctifies His Own.”
